UKPN launches customer advice surgeries

The distribution network operator (DNO), which owns and operates the electricity networks in the East of England, London and the South East, is developing a service called ‘ask the expert’, following feedback from customers at recent forums.

The free surgeries are being held at venues across UKPN’s three distribution areas.

UKPN’s Mark Edwards, who manages new initiative, said: “Customers told us they would like one-to-one discussions with us before they submit applications for connections to the electricity network, so we are introducing these ‘ask the expert’ surgeries to provide the pre-application technical support they need.

“We’re hoping the 90-minute slots will give customers enough time with our design teams to discuss complex projects and cover off topics such as network demand and capacity, substation location and design, legal issues, traffic management and earthing concerns.

“These surgeries are open to all our customers who are planning complex projects involving new or altered connections to the electricity network, whether they are individuals, businesses or developers.”

UKPN has been working to improve its customer response and, in November, launched an emergency helpline for customers experiencing power cuts, following the previous winter’s power cuts which affected more than 358,000 customers.

The firm’s director of customer services Matt Rudling said: “Communication with customers is a top priority, and we want to ensure everyone in the South East, London and East Anglia, knows who can help them get the lights on quickly.”
