North West water company United Utilities will join a list of the 50 most sustainable companies worldwide later this month.
The Warrington-based firm will feature in the Global Challenges Index (GCX) from 18 September.
Established in 2007 by the Hannover Stock Exchange and ISS ESG, the GCX is reviewed twice a year and is designed to help investors identify companies which are pioneering ways to overcome seven global challenges:
- Climate change
- Securing an adequate supply of drinking water
- Stopping deforestation
- Preserving biodiversity
- Population development
- Combating poverty
- Supporting responsible governance structures
Constituents of the GCX must demonstrate that they continue to make a significant contribution to overcoming the challenges and at the same time, take advantage of new sustainable market opportunities.
The company will join Pennon Group and Orsted when it features on the list later in the month.
United Utilities chief financial officer Phil Aspin said: “We firmly believe that our long-term prospects are inextricably linked to our ability to operate sustainably and to serve the interests of all of our stakeholders.
“Operating in an environmentally sustainable, economically beneficial and socially responsible manner is key to delivering on our purpose to provide great water and more for the North West.”
