Utilities lead on carbon disclosure but could do more to cut emissions

As part of the carbon disclosure project (CDP), the largest 350 companies listed on the London Stock Exchange are given a score out of 100. In the 2012 edition Centrica scored 96, United Utilities 92 and SSE 90.

However, there was room for improvement in terms of carbon emissions reduction, as all three scored a ‘B’ for performance.

Paul Simpson, chief executive officer of CDP, said: “Companies that make the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index have demonstrated strong internal data management practices for the measurement of greenhouse gas emissions and energy use. They are also giving clear consideration to the business issues related to climate change and their exposure to climate-related risks and opportunities. This is vital to realising greater efficiencies, protecting the business from risk and capitalizing on opportunities.”

Simon Henderson, Centrica’s director of corporate responsibility, said the company had invested in producing low carbon energy and helped customers reduce usage by installing energy efficient technology.

He added: “The Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index is a particularly important submission for Centrica not only because of the nature of our business, but also because of the value we feel it adds to our reporting on progress in carbon measurement and reduction.”
