Water industry responds to Ofwat’s call for non-executive directors

Mark Clare will join the board as non-executive director with effect from 1st November 2013.

This follows an announcement from Anglian Water Services that it had appointed a new non-executive director, Paul Whittaker, to its board last week.

In a consultation last month, Ofwat said Water company boards should have more independent non-executive directors than executives or investors.

The regulator gave the water companies until April 2014 to prepare voluntary codes and said that if water companies failed to act, it would introduce license conditions requiring them to do so.

Ofwat chair Jonson Cox said: “There is significant public pressure on companies to operate to high standards of governance and transparently demonstrate that they do so. We have seen unwelcome criticism, in the media, of some companies’ Board leadership and governance arrangements.

“Our board considers that a self-regulatory approach is preferable, but this relies on companies responding promptly in the same vein.”

The consultation closes on 31 October.
