Water Plus appoints new chief executive

Water Plus, the business retail joint venture (JV) between Severn Trent and United Utilities, has appointed Andy Hughes as its new chief executive. He succeeds Sue Amies-King who has led the water retailer since its creation in March 2016.

Hughes joins Water Plus from Severn Trent where he was head of credit management and payment services.

With a background in retail and commercial markets at financial organisations including Barclays, Barclaycard and HBOS, he plans to build on the growth of Water Plus across the UK.

Amies-King was formerly business retail director at United Utilities and was chosen to lead the JV in preparation for the opening of the English water retail market on 1 April 2017.

Water Plus said she was instrumental in combining the skills of both companies to provide an “efficient and cost-effective business focused on improved customer service and growth”.

Hughes said: “I am really pleased and excited to be joining a market leader that has had a good start in the water market since it opened in England in April 2017. I would like to also thank Sue Amies-King for all that she has done for the business and for setting up such a great team of people.”

The JV between two of the UK’s listed water companies provides retail services to more than 350,000 customers and employs around 400 people.
