Water retailers still failing to pass on support message to customers

Some water retailers are still failing to signpost businesses to the support with their water bills available to them during the lockdown, according to CCW.

The watchdog has been regularly monitoring retailers’ websites during the pandemic and said that the speed at which companies have updated on help available has “differed considerably”.

Since code changes were brought in last month, CCW has been actively contacting those retailers who were failing to display important information.

It said there still remained “a number of retailers” who have no messages on the regulatory changes to help business customers despite being required to do this and being reminded.

CCW said the information on some other retailers’ websites could also be made clearer so customers are left in no doubt about what help they can receive from their retailer and for how long.

However, the watchdog stressed that some companies had responded positively to its challenge to improve communication with their customers – and it hoped this would encourage others to follow suit.

Dr Mike Keil, head of policy and research at CCW, said: “This is a desperately hard time for many small businesses and the last thing they need is water bills adding to the pressure. The good news is support is out there, in many cases, but more must be done to make customers aware of the help that is available.”
