Water Saving Week focuses on non-domestic efficiency

Waterwise has set the agenda for next month’s Water Saving Week to get people and communities talking about the importance of using water efficiently outside of their homes.

The event, which is now in its seventh year, will take place from 17 to 21 May to get people to take action to save water using social media and online content.

The focus of the five days will be saving water outside the home, where around a third of the country’s water is used by businesses, community buildings and other non-domestic purposes.

Waterwise’s managing director, Nicci Russell, said: “This year in Water Saving Week we’re getting the conversation going across the UK on saving water outside the home – at work, in the community, and in the garden. If we don’t use water wisely there just won’t be enough to go round – and we can bring our carbon footprint down while we’re at it, because as we waste less water we pump, treat and heat less water. Let’s think about how we can use water wisely every day, everywhere, not only in our homes but outside of them – and ask businesses to help.”

The NGO will be engaging with the public to get people thinking about the water they use when they are away from home and how local businesses and workplaces could be encouraged to use water more efficiently. Businesses, community sites and other non-household settings will be guided on the benefits of saving water and how to do so.

Last year the event’s messages about the carbon footprint of using water reached 3.5 million people.
