Welsh Water to cut 360 jobs in efficiency drive

The cuts come as the water company embarks on a programme to reduce its wholesale and retail expenditure by £56 million over the five years to 2020.

Welsh Water is working with trade unions GMB, Unison and Unite as it aims to scale back more than 10 per cent of its 3,000 strong workforce.

The company has stated it aims to lose most of the positions via a combination of voluntary redundancies, retirees and not filling vacancies.

This comes on top of the company already having “recruitment controls” in place over the last 12 months to reduce the number of contractors and agency workers being employed.

The cuts are necessary to allow the company to deliver on its PR14 business plan to invest £1.7 billion and to ensure bills rise below the rate of inflation over the next five year price control period.

A Welsh Water spokesperson said: “To achieve we need to redesign our business to meet increasing customer expectations, and to introduce more flexible work patterns and innovative approaches.”

The company added it has worked “tirelessly” with the trade unions to deliver a new five year deal for the majority of its workforce that includes a new pay deal with a minimum 1.5 per cent pay increase per annum in order to provide “a more flexible service”.
