Wessex Water joins metal theft sting

Wessex staff helped to identify suspected stolen equipment from water and sewerage sites, which had been forensically marked.
Wiltshire police arrested suspects in Swindon, Trowbridge and Chippenham for offences including theft, handling stolen goods and burglary.
Nigel Martin, head of water supply at Wessex, said: “The raids proved to be a huge success with us recovering a number of suspected stolen items including water supply fittings and inspection chamber lids.”
Other organisations affected by metal theft also took part in the raids.
Government voted down a private member’s bill to tackle metal theft last month, but is understood to be moving to ban scrap yards from using cash payments.
