Wessex Water launches campaign against flushable wet wipes

The water firm is calling on supermarkets and manufacturers to change how the products are labelled, but said it has so far had a “disappointing response”.

One of the worst affect areas in its region was Salisbury, where company operators were unblocking on average one sewer a day.

Last year, Wessex Water dealt with 13,000 blockages across its region, costing £5 million in total to clear.

Matt Wheeldon, Wessex Water’s head of wastewater strategy, said: “Wet wipes are the main cause of blockages in our region, they don’t break down in the same way as toilet paper, despite many manufacturers including the word flushable on the packaging.”

The company is using mobile billboards in hotspot areas, urging its customers to get behind a campaign encouraging everyone to bin wet wipes.

Wheeldon added: “Unfortunately, people are flushing these down the toilet not realising that they are causing blockages, often further down the system.

“Not only is it unpleasant, it puts theirs and their neighbours’ homes in danger and the clean-up costs and disruption can be significant.”
