Where do the savviest energy customers live?

Yorkshire is home to the savviest energy customers in the UK, according to research from the Energy Switch Guarantee (ESG).

The study looked at the number of households in each UK Parliamentary constituency that switched electricity supplier between September 2016 and August 2017.

It found Leeds North West is “home to the UK’s most prolific switchers”, with 23 per cent (8,444) of all households having looked to save money by switching provider during the period.

Yorkshire accounts for seven of the top ten switching areas – Leeds North West, Haltemprice and Howden, Sheffield Hallam, Leeds North East, Leeds East, Leeds Central and Pudsey. These are joined by Peterborough, Plymouth Moor View and Newcastle-upon-Tyne East.

Tina Tietjen, independent chair of the ESG, said: “Over 4.5 million customers have switched energy supplier so far this year and taken action to reduce their bills by hundreds of pounds a year.

“Our figures show that whilst some areas of the country – like Yorkshire in particular – are taking advantage of the potential savings on offer, others are missing out.”

The figures also showed Scottish customers are among those changing providers less frequently – Orkney and Shetland was at the bottom of the table, with just five per cent of all properties (1,312) having switched providers.

The ESG is a voluntary industry initiative launched in June last year, made up of a set of commitments from suppliers to ensure that switching energy supplier is simple, speedy and safe for customers.

It said it is on track to cover more than 90 per cent of the market by the end of the year.
