Which? pushes back Big Switch auction to 9 May

The organisation has responded to suggestions that it could profit from the exercise by repeating that it will put any surplus funds towards its campaigning activities.

Which? said it would announce how many people had switched in late summer or early autumn.

So far, Eon has said it will bid for cash and cheque customers – and make that tariff available to all of its customers, although cash and cheque deals tend to be the least discounted on the market. Co-operative Energy has also agreed to bid after Which? changed its definition of a ‘market leading’ bid to mean that companies could bid their existing best deals. That allayed Co-op’s concerns about giving new customers a better deal than existing customers.

Which? also confirmed that if it did not secure a market-leading deal from suppliers taking part, it would show consumers that have signed up to the exercise details of the deals that exist for individuals switching supplier.

The organisation also suggested it may undertake more collective switching initiatives, with a renewable energy option potentially on the cards in the future.
