WPD launches ‘industry’s first’ open access data portal

Western Power Distribution (WPD) has launched an open access online portal offering a “wealth of data” on consumption, generation and loads across its network.

The Beta Connected Data Portal is the first of its kind to be launched by a distribution network operator in Great Britain. The firm said it is aiming to set the standard for the industry by providing information in a “consistent, standardised and easily understandable way.”

WPD said users such as businesses, governments, local authorities, academics and customers will be able to “investigate and interrogate” the data, building interactive graphs and maps without having to download the information. The portal also incorporates application programming interfaces, allowing users to automate the gathering and processing of datasets.

The company said the online catalogue will help stakeholders to gain a better understanding of their local and regional energy system, for example, helping local authorities to efficiently plan low-carbon infrastructure in areas with limited network capacity and enabling consumer apps to inform people of the best times to charge their electric vehicles.

WPD data and digitalisation manager Jonathan Berry said: “Since launching our digitalisation strategy in 2020, we have moved quickly to start delivering real life tools that our customers and stakeholders can get their hands on and use for their own benefits.

“The Beta Connected Data Portal is a vital cog in this process and will help to open up access to data across our network so that businesses, academics and customers can use it to make practical applications and changes to their organisations.

“In line with Ofgem’s data best practices, we have sought to create a flexible and easy to use portal where users can get the most out of the data available. Taking lessons from data access such as National Grid ESO, we hope that the portal goes some way to creating an industry standard for DNOs and the electricity industry as a whole.”

Last week, National Grid announced it had agreed to acquire WPD for £7.8 billion as part of a strategic pivot towards electricity that will also see it sell a majority stake in its gas transmission business.
