Two of the projects look to harness the internet of things (IoT) to improve customer offerings while the third project aims to create a data repository for network operators and local authorities to support planning and decision making.

Green light for SSEN’s £488m Skye power line upgrade

SSEN’s £488 million proposal to upgrade power lines between Fort Augustus and the Isle of Skye has been given the green light. Ofgem approved the plans after ruling that “there is sufficient evidence of a clear needs case for the Skye project on the basis that there is the need for asset intervention and that new generation has shown enough progress to warrant adding additional capacity to the Skye circuit”. The plans include replacing the existing single 132kV overhead line (OHL) which spans across 160km between Fort Augustus on the mainland to Ardmore on the Isle of Skye.

SSE reports 29% renewables output shortfall

SSE’s renewable assets generated 29% less power than forecast during the first quarter of the financial year. In total, SSE’s renewable energy sources produced 624GWh. This represents a 5% shortfall on total planned output for the year. SSE attributes the drop in output to “dry and still weather patterns” during the three months until the end of June.

Strategic Innovation Fund projects awarded £95.3m

Ofgem has awarded £95.3 million to 10 projects for the final phase of the inaugural round of its Strategic Innovation Fund. More than a third of the money – £33.3 million – will go towards a project led by National Gas Transmission to establish whether existing gas compression units on the transmission network can be adapted to work with 100% hydrogen.

The government pledge to develop 50GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 would be very difficult under the Large Onshore Transmission Investment regime, Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks has said. The network operator said it strongly supported the Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) framework as an alternative because it enables a tranche of transmission projects to be fast-tracked.

Starmer pledges overhaul of CfDs

Sir Keir Starmer has promised to set new rules for Contracts for Difference (CfD) auctions as part of plans for an incoming Labour government to “throw everything” at decarbonising the UK’s power system by 2030. As part of Labour’s "national mission" on clean energy, Starmer said the party would link access to public investment and subsidies, such as those on offer for low carbon energy projects via CfD auctions, to factors like job quality, wages, and access to trade unions.
