MOSL appointed as market operator

Market Operator Services Limited (MOSL) has been appointed as the official market operator from 1 April when the non-household water retail market opens.

Water regulator Ofwat has today (7 March) written to all water wholesalers and retailers to confirm that MOSL has the required level of support from all licensees to be market operator.

The regulator had asked all licensed parties for confirmation on the appointment of a market operator on the 13 February.

This is the latest development in the run-up to market opening, which environment secretary Andrea Leadsom confirmed will proceed as planned on 1 April.

MOSL chief executive Ben Jeffs has announced he will step down from the position in the summer. The organisation is in the process of recruiting a permanent chief executive to take his place.

There are currently 18 licensed retailers – eight new entrants and 10 incumbent retail arms.

Five companies have applied and are awaiting to here whether their licences have been granted by Ofwat. They are: Cambrian Utilities – a subsidiary of Glas Cymru; Scottish retailer Everflow; Peel Water; Advanced Demand Side Management; and Greene King – a brewer which is the first, and so far only, company to apply to self-supply.
