It could be the long-lived media firestorm around the PV tariff cuts, in which the Utility Week office, for one, was bombarded with emails about how the industry would be brought to its knees by the change.

No-one came out of that with much glory: not Decc, which panicked at the sight of a boom; nor the solar providers, who claimed they would be finished by a tariff cut that was always part of the plan – albeit that it was due to be applied some months later.

The PV industry, in dealing with a short-term problem, should have thought more about the long-term message it was giving.
