Birmingham-based Tonik Energy has launched a new variable EV tariff for the “early adapters championing the EV revolution”.
The “Charge EV” tariff is 100 per cent renewable electricity, and 10 per cent green gas with the remaining 90 per cent gas is carbon offset, the company claims.
Chris Russell, managing director at Tonik, said: “We wanted to create something for those early adopters who are championing the EV revolution. We’re giving people the option to power their EVs with 100 per cent renewable electricity to reduce their carbon footprint even further.
“In addition we’re also offering Charge EV members 1,200 miles every year they are on the tariff, £40 discount off our EV chargers and a pair of tickets to Fully Charged Live 2019. It’s our greenest tariff available with some really cool added benefits.”
Electric vehicle sales surged to a new record high in August, accounting for one in every 12 cars bought in the UK.
Figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) yesterday (5 September) show nearly 7,500 hybrid, plug-in hybrid and pure electric cars were registered during the month – an 89 per cent increase on the same period in 2017.
Last year the UK government’s vehicle licensing statistics reported that Ultra Low Emission Vehicles (ULEV) registration was up a record 27 per cent meaning there were 53,203 new ULEVs registered in 2017 alone.
At the start of 2018 there were 200,000 electric cars on the UK roads, a figure that is expected to be even higher by the end of the year.
Tonik’s product director, Steve Springett, said: “It’s really encouraging to see the increase in the popularity of EVs, it demonstrates that people are not just engaging with the bigger environmental picture, they are actively looking to be part of it.
“We want to support people who make greener choices, and our EV tariff not only does this, but it also rewards them for choosing an EV in the first place.”
There are a number of EV tariffs on the market that are available to consumers.
Ecotricity offers a “Fully Charged” bundle which includes green electricity and an EV home energy tariff, half price use of the Electric Highway car charging app and a discount on a Rolec home charger.
The company says this bundle could save customers £350 in their first year.
In June this year Octopus Energy launched “Octopus Energy Go”, a “100 per cent green tariff” designed specifically for EV owners. Octopus says this tariff allows car charging at 70 per cent less than a typical big six tariff.
Ovo meanwhile launched its “EV Everywhere” tariff in August 2017.
This tariff is a two-year fixed energy plan with Ovo’s green energy add-on which gets the customer 100 per cent renewable electricity worth £120 over two years.
